San Diego’s downtown, near the beautiful harbor, is full of activity. Tall skyscrapers, green expanses of park areas, and restored turn-of-the-century buildings are in close proximity. You can take a leisurely stroll to many of the downtown destinations, or use the excellent public transportation system, which even includes trolleys.

Within this downtown district, which encompasses about a square mile, you can shop, visit art galleries, enjoy a broad variety of foods, and then finish your day by listening to music in a jazz club located in Gaslamp Quarter, a unique area of restored Victorian business buildings. A horse-drawn carriage ride thru the Gaslamp Quarter is a perfect end to the day.

Hotel del Coronado		 Harbor and Embarcadero Districts of San Diego
Take a day to venture down to the waterfront’s Harbor and Embarcadero Districts. Be amazed at the vastness of the Midway, the mighty aircraft carrier located at the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum. See the stately and graceful Star of India, one of the old time sailing ships moored at the San Diego Maritime Museum. Book a dinner cruise, or go on a whale watching tour. Take a short boat trip to Coronado Island, site of the unique Hotel del Coronado, well known for its role in many movies such as Some Like It Hot, which starred Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon. Rent a bike, jog, stroll, or rollerblade in our many parks. Go for a sail—you’ll love the view of San Diego from your vantage point out in the harbor!

Don’t forget to visit the world famous San Diego Zoo located in Balboa Park. San Diego Zoo is home to over 4,000 rare or endangered species, including pandas, lions, koalas, giraffes, elephants, and bears, living in natural habitats. The zoo features educational programs and special rides that take viewers safely into the world of these unique and beautiful creatures. Balboa Park, which houses the zoo, also has more than eight specialty gardens, including cactus gardens, a palm canyon, and the historic and exquisite glass Botanical Gardens Building.

Once you’ve savored some of downtown’s flavor, you can begin to branch out by car for some day trips filled with scenery and local color. You can watch the surfers while you sunbathe on the beaches at Pacific Beach, then visit the shops in the village of La Jolla, or shoot a round of golf at Torrey Pines, whose South Course is the site of the 2008 U.S. Open
